August is coming and I'm really excited.

Cool weather is slowly making an entrance. Wind and rain is cooling us down from the hot summer. The hot weather was a breeding ground for all the anger and irritation. I'm glad that it's leaving us.

From August onwards, it's a season of celebrations. There is National day, year end festivals and all the birthdays to celebrate. I can't wait! I thought I was "domestic-alised" (a term my friend used to call those who became homely, or simply aunty). I probably became what you would call, fusion. I am loving the party celebrations with family. It can be at home, in a pub or a hotel. A reason to celebrate probably made it more meaningful and memorable.

I've came to realise something crappy. Living is about tolerance. Celebration is about living.

Survive that and I should see light.

 Comments

New Pad!

Just shifted to new place. Lots of things to be done but I am taking it bit by bit. Writing with my iPhone now, it is super slow. I shall look for a good tool to write more. Ciao!

New directions come in like water running from the taps. It's flowing... and flowing.. and it's overflowing! It's really overwhelming. It is at a point such that I can't concentrate on my personal things.

The load can't help feeling heavy. A 10kg load feels 10kg obviously.. what else can it be?

I am too tired. Getting away does not solve the problem, it's still there...

I am almost sure that my intuition is right. When lies fall in between the lines, I could sense it immediately. Somehow, my nose sniffed it like a dog.

I am really at a lost of words. I felt betrayed. It is obvious but no one seemed to pay any attention. Can't trust a lying and pretending man anymore. It's just too much for me take. I can only pray that the lier will one day return to his own senses before anything major happens. I do not wish to bother anymore. It is as if I don't have enough stress.

God, do answer my prayers. I need it badly.

 Comments

First Drive

Today marks my first drive on the expressway. It is a milestone of my life. I can finally drive on the public road!!

The drive wasn't perfect but I didn't feel nervous or worried either. The car's gear stick is abit stiff and it isn't what I am used to. I believe that I'll be okay with it with more usage of it. Driving is a very logical thing; driving is like programming. Driving manual car is sometimes about learning the science behind each component of the car. So cool.

However, I still probably wouldn't like to drive to work every morning. Why get pissed off by other cars on the road and then get stressed at work after that?

Unlike Dempsey road which has recently become commercialised, Wessex Estate remained undisturbed.

Colbar is one of the places in which you didn't even imagine it as a bar. It's not really an upmarket bar or pub. In fact, it's more like a coffee shop selling european beers.

Food isn't something of their expertise. I think drinking beer there would be a cool thing.

Coffeeshop setup of the Colbar. Very quiet in the afternoon and it gets crowded surprisingly at night.
Influenced by the tonnes of steamboat we had, we decided to try a commercial one.

Tian Tian Steamboat is located in Bugis area, just behind Liang Seah street. They impressed us with the soup tastes!

Even outside of the windows blew smoky incense wind from where people were burning incense papers. Midnight is the time when 9th day of Lunar New Year reaches. It is also the time when we pray to the Heavenly Jade Emperor for his birthday. A form of welcome for his majesty to visit the family.

In difficult times, I think god sometimes plays an important part in our life. I will pray for the good things to come, hope for blessings from the good deeds we have done and may there be forgiveness for any wrongdoings. I think dreams keep us going; dreams are always possibilities in life. Motivation is key. Adidas: Impossible is Nothing. Yes!

I think due to medicine I took for my blocked nose, I am awake right now and probably talking strange things. Pardon me. Geez.. please get me to sleep and prepare for a good tomorrow!

The theory is simple and it is like the Chinese Kongfu technique, Taiji. It doesn't just mean pushing things to others. The technique teaches us how to handle the stumbling block by getting around it and eventually win it.

Face it, there isn't a 100% in this world. If we can win 80% and lose 20%, treat it that we won. If we can increase the winnings with another 10-20%, treat it as a blessing. Nobody wants to lose. Of course, sometimes the result can be subjective. Which way do you prefer to see it?

Before looking at what is to be done for 2009, what have I achieved in 2008?

Let's recap my 2008 resolutions:

1. Get my driving license.

I've almost completed my driving lessons (BUT I have not gotten the license!)

2. Get my PMP.

I've completed my PMP course (BUT I have not taken the exam!)

3. Win lottery.

OKAY... I NEED TO DO MORE PRAYERS

4. Buy a house/apartment nearer workplace.

Consider DONE. Oh well, it's not nearer but maybe more accessible??

5. At least 3 vegetarian days each week excluding travelling days.

I didn't know that I have such a funny exclusion clause on travelling days. DID not achieve but I did it once a month occasionally. :P

6. Do more charity.

Yes!!! I am proud to say that I did. I donated items to Salvation Army 3 times this year. I shall make it a culture. And at my employer's charity events, I had to donate some money under peer pressure. :S

7. Fill up 1/4 of piggybank in the office.

It wasn't 1/4, but 1/12. :P

8. Own a new UMPC.

I have discarded this "want" of my life and I am happy with my Thinkpad.

9. Learn to cook more new healthy dishes.

Yes!!! I did manage to learn more new dishes. Healthiness sometimes is subjective. :P

10. Have a fulfilling year 2008.

Yes!!! It was fulfilling with a number of memorable events. :)

Not so bad eh? I score 4 out of 10. hahaha.

I had Clam Chowder soup with the potato croquette. Soft food for me eat. The Clam Chowder soup is a disappointment. However, it was not about food that I wanted to talk about.

I met this old Chinese couple at Mos Burger having dinner. The wife had ordered food and they were waiting for the food. I am surprised that they actually had food at Mos Burger. I thought it's a youngster stuff. It seems that they went shopping and decided to rest there. They seemed to enjoy the food.

They look loving. I wonder if all love could last like this. I have seen and heard a few too many examples of disappointing men. It is challenging my confidence in man's love. Once again, this scenario warms my heart back. Greatest Love of All...

We were facing the heat of the recession and so we decided to delight ourselves with great food but not too extravagant. Brewerkz happy hour price was $10 per jug of Golden Ale. Great deal.

Cold cold beer
Although I've had my tooth plucked before, you can't eliminate the fear. It's better that you don't know about it at all.

So with recommendation, I visited this dental clinic where I've never been. The place is small and cosy although it is not located in a super upmarket building. I heard that they are good and professional. Of course, they come with a price. Private service with a private price, just like private hospitals.

Since it is my first time, I had to fill in an admission card. They also performed an X-ray scanning for me. Their machine is kind of new age. It scans like an MRI, just that you are standing and of course the scan is only on your jaws. The machine will rotate around your jaw area to get the images.

The clinic lounge area where you sit and wait

The espresso machine and the entrance to the surgery rooms

The nurses take care of you and explains everything in detail. They also help to check on you every now and then to attend to your needs. You are never left to think about what's going on although it's not perfect. If you would like explanation, they'll take the time to explain what is going to happen next.

I get pillows to hug during the surgery and Burberry pattern blankets to cover my body to prevent myself from feeling cold. I get sunglasses to wear to prevent my eyes from facing the light, thereafter they would cover my eyes with a mask during the surgery. I am not sure if they just don't want me to see the dentist with big eyes. Haha.

They had coffee machines and instant noodles available if you did not eat. However, I think there are enough butterflies in my tummy. Actually I had a Coffee Bean Brek 'O' Day's breakfast before I went. Hehehe.

They gave me a number of antibiotics and a first dose of painkillers. Lots of anaestatic is also injected. During the surgery, I felt nothing at all. Hearing all those sounds is enough and feeling the strings during the stitching. After the surgery, I had the pain 2 hours later while biting on the gauze. It was a 1.5 hours of pain before I dare to take some painkillers by opening my mouth.

And tada.. no more, life as usual. One big tooth extracted. The wisdom of my life...

It seems like they have made an effort to improve the quality. Food served are melting hot.

My Beef Lagsane

As for Coffee Bean, they always great with their salads. As for their breakfast, it's not bad for the prices between $7 and $10. Oh well, at least better than Macdonalds.

Eggs Benedict

Not exactly good, tasted like a premix. However, it's still okay.

I had an off day last Friday. I went to Sentosa for a break. The island is better on a weekday, much less crowded. The beach was hosting Youth beach volleyball tournaments. Anyway, we couldn't really be bothered, so we focus on beer and eating at Coastes Bar instead. A group happened to be holding their private function.

My Carlsberg Draft Beer at Coastes Bar

Saturday Off!

I organised a Hen's Night for one of my best buddies! She is getting married one month later. I had it planned out.. but somehow everything somewhere went wrong a little. Due to the number of attendees, it was not as exciting as what I thought. Oh well, luckily she enjoyed the catching up with us though. We had great pictures together. The late night ended with minced pork noodle at a coffee shop. Haha.

Sunday Ending!
That's today! The long weekend is ending. I had a great lunch at Dempsey road with my favourite flat white. A day at the Science Centre was fun too.

 Comments

QB House Haircut Today

I haven't had a hair trim for a few months. The hair was growing quite long. I decided to go for a quick haircut. Recently, they've setup a QB House inside the Jurong East Bus Interchange where I would always be there to board my feeder bus. I decided to give it a try. $10 for a 10min haircut they say. I heard that their haircut is not bad for this price.

What's QB? It means "Quick Beauty". The concept came from Japan. The hairstylists are trained by the Japanese instructors. It is about having a quick haircut at a low rate and with a reasonable quality.

I bought the QB House ticket. They have a ticket machine where I put in a $10 note and out comes a ticket like this:

The salon comes in a box which is like a small cabin. Fully equipped. Somehow they have a technique to keep hair away from your shirt/blouse. All equipments are sterilised in a machine. The comb used for your hair is always either given to you or thrown away. After the haircut, there is a tool to vaccuum away any stray hair left on your hair or face.

My feeling immediately is it's so clean!!! That is their professionalism. I'm truly impressed.

QB House Website

 Comments

Happy Halloween!

It's Halloween Day today. By chance I had my project kick-off meeting today. It's the start of a new project. In my last project kick-off, I had it during the Chinese "Halloween Day" too. Phew.. hope both of them will go well!

Anyway, luckily my driving lesson didn't go too bad today. I was quite satisfied with the revision of my stage 2 classes. Changing of lanes, making U-turns smoothly and changing down of gears. I'm getting smoother each time.

Today marks the end of stage 2. So, the instructor told me that after this, I need to take a simulator lesson where I will be practising stuff that I don't get to learn in reality until emergency happens. He told me that it's like an arcade game. All right then.

I was also told that I'm tip-toeing on my left foot on the clutch. The instructor told me to get a pillow to support my back so that my left foot can touch the clutch completely. Oh well, I'm too short. The pillows are kept in the instructor room, feels abit embarassing to go and get it before lesson and put it back after lesson. We'll see how it goes.

What comes next? Hallelujah!

Though it's a run, I walked instead. I joined their 5Km fun run. Fortunately the day is not hot, it's cloudy and it's not raining. I realised that walking can be more tiring than running. It's like dragging........

This was at the starting point just before the race. The DJs were good in bringing up the energies of the crowd.

In front of the tape, the elite runners from last year are standing right at the front. Just before the tape were 3 female Ministers who took part. Dressed in red beside them are their pacers to guide them if required. However, I heard the ministers could really run fast. The pacers were worrying how to catch up with them.

It's 29.20 seconds from the start of the race. The first 3 runners would be back soon. The finishing tape was getting ready.

34.24 seconds! 1 second later than last year I heard! Still not back yet!

The champion is back!

Finished!

This runner came in third at around 38 seconds.

I didn't think that a bank would operate like this. There were 2 policeman in front where people approach the bank service staff.

I really wonder how safe this bank is, of course coming from an amateur point of view.

Last Tuesday I went to Dempsey road in a afternoon. It was around 2.30-3pm when I reached. Business people had finished their executive lunch sets and all left this "atas" place. I took a bus trip here.

When I was just walking in from the bus stop, it started to drizzle.. the raindrops kept getting bigger. So I ran and there I saw Jones The Grocer. Great. I wanted to try their food. I was lucky that they still serve food at this hour.

Jones The Grocer is a australian grocery store with gourmet food products. It has a cafe as well. Needless to say, everything is pretty much Australian.

Jones The Grocer

I expected the good Australian coffee and delicious everyday food. They didn't tarnish their own reputation. I loved the place.

A simple bowl of greens with French dressing

Simple rolls with lamb. I thought it was nothing much with dry meat inside. The first bite told me that I was wrong. The lamb was gooooood

A great day with simple and healthy selection for lunch.

Our door gift was some Swensen's food voucher. It wasn't anything fantastic but it serves a good free dinner.

After having dinner, I realise that spending the vouchers on their ice-cream seemed more worthwhile. The food wasn't very good. Just slightly better than Pasta Mania..

My vouchers

Me reading the Swensen's menu

Our side order - Rodeo Wings
Deep fried, juicy but too sweet

Our main dish - Crayfish Pasta
Bland.. sad to say.

Didn't take the actual food pictures.. haha.

Good pizzas are hard to find. So far, those that took our likings are Ice Cold Beer's pizzas and Ricciotti's pizzas. Ricciotti being the best so far, the authentic Italian pizza without any reservations in the freshness of the ingredients.

Pete's place came into the picture by chance. It's situated in Grand Hyatt's basement. When I go restaurants, I do not normally think of a restaurant in a hotel. I mean, how many chances do I actually go into a Singapore hotel to wine and dine other than treats from others? So, there I go. There was a sale and then we were hungry.. Yes, Pete's place.

It's a cosy little place with a bar and fireplace meant for baking the pizzas. Free flow of fresh bread and butter section. Not those that you would find in Cafe Cartel without any selection of bread and butter. There are a few special types of bread for us to choose from. If only they provide us olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dip in. I'll try to ask next time.

Without much money in the pocket after the shopping, we went for a $25 Pete's Place pizza. Here they came:

For a moment, the egg was embedded in the centre of the pizza. The whole slice tasted great with the fresh veggies on top and the slices of beef ham thingy. That's cool. It's the first time I tried such a pizza. Makes you want more.

Pete's Place
Where: Grand Hyatt Singapore, 10 Scotts Road
Tel: 6732 1234
Opening hours: Dinner from 6pm to 10.30pm

 Comments

Marmalade Pantry

I have heard so much about it. Some upmarket cafe or something. How good will the food really be??

On this special occasion, I gave a treat at the Marmalade Pantry. I went to the one at Palais Renaissance. Due to the construction works in Orchard, there were loud drilling noises before I stepped into the Palais Renaissance. I was wondering.. "Oh dear, it's so noisy. Will Marmalade Pantry be getting the noise too? It's so loud. Sh*t".

After walking in and the shopping centre door is closed, the noise was immediately shut off by 90%. Since the "pantry" is at the basement, there was no more noise when I got there. Phew!!!

The menu looked special. It was in the form of A4 papers and they looked like they were clipped onto a A4 board. It looked like a notepad. Casual is what it looks like. Those who are having lunch around you are casual too. Tai tai style casualness

You get fine dining service in this place where it didn't looked like it. Cool. So we made the orders.. Foies Gras Starter, Lamb and Ultimate Beef Burger. Coffee to end the meal.

Okay, the food tasted as good as what it looks like in the following pictures. No doubt!!

Pan Seared Foie Gras Starter

Lamb. I forgot the actual name. Very european and yummy.

The Ultimate Beef Burger, VERY JUICY BEEF PATTY. LOVIN IT!

Flat White, thick and great to wake me up.
Milord!

Allez venez! Milord

Allez venez! Milord
Vous avez l'air d'un môme
Laissez-vous faire, Milord
Venez dans mon royaume
Je soigne les remords
Je chante la romance
Je chante les milords
Qui n'ont pas eu de chance
Regardez-moi, Milord
Vous ne m'avez jamais vue...
Mais vous pleurez, Milord
Ça, j' l'aurais jamais cru.

+parlé:

Eh! bien voyons, Milord
Souriez-moi, Milord
Mieux que ça, un p'tit effort...
Voilà, c'est ça!
Allez riez! Milord
Allez chantez! Milord
Ta da da da...
Mais oui, dansez, Milord
Ta da da da...
Bravo! Milord...
Encore, Milord...
Ta da da da...

What I learnt last week didn't seem to work today...

Mistakes:
1. Clutch in too early before stopping
2. Hit kerb when trying to u-turn
3. Couldn't change down gears smoothly from 4 to 2 from before reaching u-turn lane, I could feel the jerks.
4. Engine stalled a few times
5. Couldn't move off to do a wide right turn and change gear from 1st to 2nd at the same time.

Nothing was encouraging throughout the whole drive. Every step I do was criticised. I felt even worse and very discouraged.

I know I need more practices. Can somebody please give me a chance to practice more???

It could be through the influence of people and work. I used to believe in everybody and now I am growing to disbelieve in everybody. I wonder if the positivity in me has changed to negativity.

Nowadays, I tend to notice some detail behavior or speech of one person before I believe in what they are saying. I may not show what my mind is running but yes, the evidence is generating some evaluation reports in my brain. Learning to withhold my thoughts is another skill of art.

The clearer my eyes and thoughts are, the more imperfection and lies I see. That's why it brings more negativity in one's mind. I like to analyse human behaviour. All the information from my eyes and ears makes me analyse better on each person I talk to.

In personal life, this skepticism can be more of a hindrance than a help.

At work with the management, this seems to be a norm. Everybody is playing showhand aka mind games with what they are talking about. They are skeptical enough to see through their enemies and they must not be over skeptical to make too many enemies. The winner is the one whose skepticism is in the mind only, surprise your enemies with silent moves. Silent killer they say.

In conclusion, it's sometimes better to see the world with a slight short-sightedness and ignore some of the imperfections in life. That's how kids remain happy until they grow up.
