The Word "Please"

by jamminglady @ 17. Jul 2007 - 22:02:06

Often, we are taught that the word "please" is used in a way to show politeness. However, if you have been working in a corporate environment, you would have realised that this word "please" is giving a different kind of emotion.

"Please look into this."

"Can you please look into it?"

"Please finish this immediately."

What do you think of the above phrases? Aren't they ordering you around? They simply give you a feeling that you are being asked to do something. They do not have a genuine meaning of politeness. By adding "please", it adds stress to the action after this word.

Recently, I've been coming across this word very often in the work environment. When I'm using it, I'm actually asking somebody to do something. When it's used on me, I'm being asked to do something. Depending on the context that it is used, it could actually give a different emotion.

Well, it could be worse, if you think about it.

I've had loads of jobs in the last 30 years, where I never got to the "please," part--including my current one. So, if management is making the effort to say "please," count yourself lucky. It's ten times better than, "Do this in the alloted time, or we'll get somebody else who can." Or, "We're adding some extra stuff for you to do, see that it gets done on time."

I guess how one views the word "please" all depends on one's age, gender, and working experience, and also the type of working environment/boss(es).
